A green oasis of about 5,000 square meters, tucked away in the heart of Milan and housed within the Palazzo di Brera, the Botanical Garden was founded in 1774 under Empress Maria Theresa of Austria with the aim of teaching botany. After the Napoleonic period, it fell into neglect until the late 20th century, when restoration work was undertaken thanks to the efforts of the University of Milan, of which the Garden remains a part to this day. In anticipation of Expo 2015, the magazine *Interni* then promoted a further renovation project, culminating in the conservative restoration of a lecture hall within the Garden, designed by architect Luca Scacchetti. The primary objective of the project was to restore the space to its original purpose (teaching), transforming the classroom used for botany lessons into an integral part of the greenery, as Architect Scacchetti explained: “The goal was to transform this 17th-century building into an element of continuity with the Botanical Garden, focusing on the principle of non-separation in terms of both internal and external views.” Natural elements were therefore used to bring this vision to life, so that the entire structure could blend into the surrounding greenery. In this context, the Stone Italiana slabs from the DNA Urbano collection proved ideal. Fully embodying the company’s philosophy, these surfaces are made from street sweepings. Reclaimed materials thus become a new raw material, enabling energy savings as well as reducing disposal costs for aggregates that are typically discarded. When installed as flooring, DNA Urbano fully met the requirements dictated by the design mission: its aesthetic appearance, very similar to that of a road surface, seems to provide continuity (in both color and texture) with the outdoor gravel path, thereby blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces.
