With over 70 million visitors, the 2010 Shanghai World Expo turned the spotlight on the themes of sustainable urbanization and responsible architecture.
As part of this major World’s Fair, mOa – Mario Occhiuto architetture designed the exhibition pavilions for the Urban Best Practices area, a thematic section of the Expo exclusively dedicated to urban experiences and proposed solutions for urban sustainability.
Occhiuto’s design, winner of an international competition, focuses on two aspects: first, the restoration of the original form and structure of the former industrial buildings to transform them into exhibition pavilions; and second, the construction of a new building, C1, capable of providing services to the entire Urban Best Practices area. Occhiuto transformed the industrial structure into a sustainable exhibition space—capable of expressing new approaches to the human habitat in line with the Expo’s slogan, “Better City, Better Life”—by creating an innovative exterior envelope that reconciles the needs for climate control and natural light with architectural design choices.
